Amid a late evening rain shower on July 1 that provided a much-needed respite from last week’s heat wave, Flight 2345 by JetBlue Airways direct from New York City’s JFK airport touched down at Glacier Park International Airport (GPIA) between lightning strikes.

First Phase of GPIA Expansion Construction Receives Approval

The Flathead Municipal Airport Authority (FMAA) gave approval this week for phase one construction of Glacier Park International Airport’s (GPIA) major expansion. The project will nearly triple the airport’s current square footage of 75,000 to about 200,000 square feet. Preliminary work is almost complete, with groundbreaking for the basement facilities scheduled later this summer.

Frontier Airlines adds service to Kalispell

Discount carrier Frontier Airlines will launch a new direct flight this summer connecting Kalispell with Denver. The Denver-based company plans to start the service to Glacier Park International Airport on June 17. The nonstop flight will run three times weekly. “These new flights will open new opportunities for flyers to explore Kalispell and residents to take a trip to Denver or connect to other popular destinations in Frontier’s network,” said Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operational design, Frontier Airlines.

Ski resort finishes busiest season on record

Whitefish Mountain Resort, MT - Even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, Whitefish Mountain Resort logged its busiest season on record. Nearly 460,000 skier visits were tallied for the 2020-21 winter season, about a 20% increase over the previous high mark set during the 2018-19 winter. The 2019-20 season was cut short when the resort closed in early March 2020 due to the pandemic. The busiest single day this winter was New Year’s Eve, “which is typical for us,” said Maren McKay, Public Relations Manager at the resort.

Whitefish Mountain Resort plans 6-pack lift

A new six-person chair lift is in the works at Whitefish Mountain Resort, officials announced Monday. According to resort CEO Dan Graves, the France-based company Leitner Poma has been chosen to install the resort’s first high-speed six-pack lift out of the Base Lodge area. The lift will transport skiers to the top of the Inspiration Ridge below the old top terminal of Chair 5. Graves called the project the “largest lift investment Whitefish Mountain Resort has ever made.”
